Words and Music by Mark S. Mathes
They met up in high school
Love at first sight
She was the pretty girl
And he loved to fight
He left to join the Air Force
Came back to marry his girl
And all his life, he did all that he could – until he couldn’t
Four kids and a decent job
working at the mill
One day Jesus changed his life
And everyone could tell
He built a brand-new house for her,
10 miles east of town
He did all he could – until he couldn’t
65 years of steadfast love
And still holding hands
She knew everything about him
She sure loved her man
One night sitting side-by-side
She drew her final breath
She did all she could – until she couldn’t
He was never the same of guy
After she went to Jesus
For all of us he really tried
But he never once fooled us
He told me just the other day
I sure do miss your momma
And he did all he could – until he couldn’t
We all cried the day he died
Our hero went to heaven
Friends and Family all joined in
The long funeral procession
ome final words and a folded flag
In a snowy cemetary
We did all that we could – until we couldn’t
Lord, if we could call him back – we wouldn’t
Cause he did all he could – until he couldn’t
